EDF sues activists for £5m - an attack on peaceful protest?

A group of activists plead guilty to aggravated trespass for a protest at an EDF power plant, but now face a civil claim of up to £5m in damages - something they say is an attack on peaceful protests.

The 21 protestors from the No Dash for Gas group, which protests against government plans to develop 20 gas-fired power stations in the UK, admitted the charges against them at Mansfield magistrates' court on Wednesday.
However, they now face a claim, seen by Channel 4 News, for damages of up to £5m from French company EDF. The claim seeks compensation for a range of elements including lost profits from the delay in commissioning the power station and staffing and security costs.

Free media training from mainstream TV

The Network is a free media training event held at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in August, run in partnership with Endemol UK, producers of Big Brother, Deal or No Deal and new BBC drama Ripper Street.  Last year, 65 people learnt from the teams behind Sky News, Waterloo Road, CBBC and BBC3’s Snog, Marry, Avoid and this year, they are looking for new talent from Wales to take part in the scheme.

There’s no need to have any qualifications or experience, just a passion for getting into television.  As long as you’re 18 or over, you can apply.  Sadly, last year, there wasn’t a single person from Wales taking part in the event, so this year, it’s important that they change that.

The deadline for applications is 21st April 2013 – it’s completely free to apply for The Network, and successful applicants will have free accommodation and meals in Edinburgh in August.  There’s no doubt that this can kickstart a career - over half of the people who attended last year’s event have already gone onto work in TV.

Application is online at www.thenetwork-tv.co.uk
