DownUndercurrents- off to Australia

Helen from Undercurrents left for Australia today for a 2 year stint of
Down-Undercurrents - we wish her well.

This week Australia now reels from massive floods after a Summer of unprecedented heat across large parts of Australia.
Is it because our climate has changed?

Australia's climate commission says global warming is likely to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. But asked whether people on Australia's east coast should expect this, the New South Wales premier (photo) dismissed the question.

"If the question is about climate change go and ask me another day," Barry O'Farrell said.

"Let's not turn this near-disaster, this episode that has damaged so many properties and other things, into some politically correct debate about climate change. Give me a break."

Sticking his head in the sand eh Sheila?

Nikon in animal hunting protests

I was a photographer before I got into video and owned several Nikon cameras. However, a few weeks ago I found a Facebook group (Boycott Nikon) that were highlighting Nikon’s involvement in the US market of animal hunting accessories. This is not what I expected from the company.

In particular, one of Nikon’s websites is specifically dedicated to hunting: http://nikonhunting.com/ and promotes hunting accessories and links to websites promoting the killing of elephants, tigers, lions for fun or sport

People have logged complaints with both Nikon Europe and Nikon US asking them to clarify what is their official company stand on hunting. The answers received so far are disappointing and I quote:

“Being a premier optics manufacturer if there is a market to which we can offer our considerable services then we will facilitate where possible. It’s with this in mind that Nikon provide the rifle scope product range. Rifle shooting is a sport and sportsmen within the field require optics. Regarding hunting specifically, Nikon’s stance is that in certain parts of world it is perfectly legal and considered a sport. In the UK Nikon do not distribute the rifle scope line-up directly as there is little market for it, however in the US, for example, there is a very sizeable hunting market to which we are happy to provide the optical tools that allow them to get the most out of their chosen sport.'
It’s worth mentioning that Nikon have buckled to public pressure in the past: back in 2009 they were forced to retract from a predator hunting derby in Idaho (US) due to public pressure. A predator derby is a killing spree of carnivorous animals where hunters compete against each other on the clock to kill as many carnivores as possible in 24 hours. There are no tags, permits, or government oversight.

What can I do?

Women claim victory over spy cops court case

Ten women who say they were deceived into having sexual relationships with undercover police officers have won only a partial victory in their fight to have their case heard in the high court.

Mr Justice Tugendhat said the lawsuit alleged "the gravest interference" with the fundamental rights of women who had long-term relationships with police officers sent to spy on their political groups.  Read more

Quentin Tarantino outburst on Channel 4 news

Quentin Tarantino's new movie, Django Unchained, has its UK release on 18 January. But the violence portrayal has been a big talking point of the movie.

The director has been castigated for the film’s use of violence and approach to the subject of slavery. But for Tarantino, enough is enough. In this Channel 4 News interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Tarantino refuses to play ball, at one point telling the news anchor “I’m not your slave and you’re not my master. You can’t make me dance to your tune. I’m not a monkey.”

I find his outburst amazing in that he doesn't want to explain his love of violence in his movies. Well worth watching to get an insight into the directors mind

Police play rough with tree warriors in Hastings

Campaigners express concern over police & security behaviour as protest camp eviction looms

Tuesday 15 January 2013: A grandmother campaigning against the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road (BHLR) has been strip searched & pepper-sprayed by the police during protests against the Road, prompting activists to express concern over the behaviour of police & security during the eviction of the protest camps in Combe Haven valley.

Police have told protesters that these evictions will take place this week. Other women, in their 60s, have been thrown to the ground by security guards, receiving head injuries.
The peaceful protests against the BHLR – the “first and the worst” of over 190 road projects that George Osborne, big business and local councils are pushing across Englandf and Wales – have received significant national media coverage over the past week.

“Sally” – who has been bailed to appear at Hastings police station this Friday (18 January) – was arrested by police on the afternoon of Saturday 15 December 2012 in Sidley, Bexhill. After police demanded her name and address and she refused, she was arrested, strip-searched, forcibly finger-printed and then not released until 1.40am the next morning. The police have no blanket power to demand names and addresses [5], strongly suggesting that her arrest – which they apparently justified by claiming, falsely, that she had been involved in “anti-social behaviour” – was unlawful. [
When “Sally” did return to take part in the protests on 8 January, she was pepper-sprayed in the face by the police during the removal of a protester who had climbed up a telegraph pole.
