Nuclear Reactor site occupied

Activist video from the occupation of a farm near the planned Nuclear power station in Hinkley

Protesters have for the second time in a week occupied the development site at
Hinkley Point nuclear power station in Somerset.

Anti-nuclear activists took possession of an abandoned farm on the site which is protected under International Environmental law. The site contains a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI) and a protected wetland (R.A.M.S.A.R site) but it is due to be cleared by power company EDF in
the coming months. Protesters are angry that permission has been given for this work
to begin before the company have won permission to build their controversial new nuclear plant.

Local media reported this week that EDF will begin site clearance in the coming weeks, although EDF claimed the opposite when protesters occupied the trees on Tuesday. The first phase of the preparation works will include removal of hedgerows and all trees, before stripping all topsoil and levelling the landscape, all this despite the fact that planning permission has not been granted for a new nuclear power station at the site.

The farm premises is accessible by public footpaths and visitors are being welcomed by the protesters.

Suffragettes- Police Surveillance, 1913

‘In 1912, Scotland Yard detectives bought their first camera, to covertly photograph suffragettes. The pictures were compiled into ID sheets for officers on the ground.’
Photos uncovered by the National Archives show how the police spied on the suffragettes. These covert images - perhaps the UK's first spy pictures - have gone on display to mark the centenary of the votes-for-women movement.

V for Vendetta

When the film V for Vendetta was made during the peak period of anti-terrorist legislation the golden touch of Hollywood was, it seemed, sufficiently persuasive for the authorities to permit a massed horde of extras dressed as the nation's most famous terrorist to cavort riotously in Parliament Square.

Police spy unit kept detailed record of 86-year-old John Catt's presence at more than 55 demonstrations over four-year period. An 86-year-old man is launching a landmark lawsuit against police chiefs who labeled him a "domestic extremist" and secretly recorded his political activities in minute detail.
Lawyers for John Catt are due to open the legal action at the high court on Thursday against a clandestine police unit that has been at the centre of controversy over its undercover infiltration of political groups.Catt, who has no criminal record, was "shocked and terrified" when he discovered that police had kept a detailed record of his presence at more than 55 demonstrations over a four-year period.
The police had detailed how the Brighton pensioner took out his sketchpad and made drawings of demonstrations he attended. Also logged were slogans on his clothes and details of his appearance, such as "clean-shaven".

Police spies get a finger wagging

Police spying on protesters got a tongue lashing today- will anything really change?
Read the actual report here.

A clandestine operation that secretly deployed police spies in political groups for 40 years is severely criticised today by the official policing inspectorate, which concludes that the "intrusive" tactic should in future be used only after independent authorisation.

They also said-
The report also made unexpected criticism of police officers who monitored political activists and then retired to continue their careers "in the security industry, using their skills and experience for commercial purposes". As a result of cases where officers have perceived conflicts of interest, a new policy has now banned contact with private security firms.
