Visitors to this week’s Malvern Spring Gardening Show (12 – 15 May) will be invited to take a seat at the movies, but there’s just one snag ... they might have to queue! The World’s smallest picture house, is coming to Malvern as part of the Show’s popular Eco Home & Garden Area, but the tiny little theatre seats just 8 people at a time!
With around 90,000 people expected to attend the event at Worcestershire’s Three Counties Showground, space is likely to be at a premium!
The Sol Cinema is a micro movie house powered entirely by the Sun, and features an eclectic library of short comic, quirky and musical films with inspirational environmental themes.
The cinema uses lithium batteries to store the Sun’s energy, which powers it all day and all night, and films are screened on an LED projector. A photovoltaic panel harnesses the sunlight even as movies are being shown, so it never runs out of power.
Said Sharon Gilbert, Press & PR Manager for the Showground: “The Sol Cinema is a unique cinematic experience brought to Malvern by the award-winning arts charity, Undercurrents.
Malvern Spring Gardening Show visitors coming here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, can listen to experts talking about wildlife gardening, and watch a number of short films. They will also be encouraged to record their own eco message which will be shown on the screen!”
The cinema is just one of a whole host of attractions in the Eco Home & Garden area.
Centre-piece is an authentic Shepherd’s Garden, created by Caves Folly Nurseries of Colwall, Malvern, in association with The Cottage Herbery, Tenbury Wells. It has been designed to highlight sustainable lifestyles, and promotes the idea of living and working hand in hand with nature.
Features include a modern shepherd’s living van, alongside the Three Counties Agricultural Society’s vintage Shepherd’s Hut and collection of tools, a vegetable garden enclosed by locally-coppiced fencing, wildflowers and real lambs! ‘Little Bo Peep’ will also be visiting the garden each day.
The garden is also being used to showcase the British Wool Industry and there will be information about eco-friendly wool-based products for the home and garden. It will feature a wonderful, 14m long ‘Wool Wall’, made from around 60 British fleeces.
Rick Benson-Bunch will be at the Show, hosting ‘Moth Breakfasts’ which are not as unpalatable as they sound!
Rick will be setting moth traps every night, and then inviting visitors to join him the next morning, to discover just what species he has managed to attract overnight.
