Coal mine fraud in South Wales

Bosses of a firm which owns coal mines in the Neath, Upper Swansea and Amman valleys are being investigated over allegations of conspiracy to defraud.Two directors of Celtic Energy are being probed by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in relation to the sale of four mines in South Wales.

The firm runs opencast mines at Nant Helen in the Upper Swansea Valley, Selar near Glynneath, and East Pit near Brynamman, as well as the coal washery and distribution centre in Onllwyn, and the Margam site near Bridgend.

A Celtic Energy spokesman said: "We can confirm that two of our directors are under investigation regarding the sale of four coal mines in south Wales.
