From the Channel 4 programme "Dispatches" on 19th October 2009- our video letter to the Met police was used in this programme
Climate protesters win historic High Court victory
It was the largest and most expensive policing operation ever used against a single protest (costing £5.3m including substantial funding from the Home Office) involved 26 police forces for 2 weeks. For 7 days in August 2008 those forces, led by Kent Police, carried out a continuous, systematic and unlawful mass stop and search regime against the public.
I have just watched my footage broadcast on Meridian tonight (Misuse of powers 5.19PM on Fri Jan 29 2010).While I appreciate the reporting of the important issue,I have 2 complaints which i have sent ITV reporter Sarah Saunders
1. As i clearly stated in my recent email to them, I filmed those images of Dave Morris and the protesters being searched. I am an accredited NUJ journalist so why was my footage labeled 'Protesters video'?
2. No fee was agreed nor even discussed with me for use of our images
I await their reply

Tony Blair and the Iraq war

The only question that counts is the one that the Chilcot inquiry won't address: was the war with Iraq illegal? If the answer is yes, everything changes. The war is no longer a political matter, but a criminal one, and those who commissioned it should be committed for trial for what the Nuremberg tribunal called "the supreme international crime": the crime of aggression...read more

A vision of 2010 from 1972

2010: Living In the Future | the book
A children's book called "2010: Living in the Future" by Geoffrey Hoyle. Written in 1972.
With few people traveling to work there are no morning or evening rush hours—no streets crowded with cars, buses, and people. Gone are the oily smells and fumes of traffic. When people travel, they go by electric car, bus, or train.
In 2010 people can live and breathe in clean, fresh surroundings, but it was not always like this.

How the Internet is changing all aspects of our lives
SuperPower is a season of programmes across online, radio and television, investigating how the internet affects lives and has become the catalyst for a fundamental change in societies around the world.
During this season the BBC will look at how the Internet is changing all aspects of our lives. Season highlights include:
* What it means to be connected and unconnected in the digital world
* How it is shrinking the world and allowing us to experience each others lives in new ways
* How it has changed cultural attitudes to marriage, dating and disability
* Our MyWorld competition, where you can submit your two-minute film for our competition.
And we ask who is really shaping the web? Is it us - or the individuals and companies who have mastered the web?

The Big Garden Birdwatch has never been more important than it is today, with the results from half a million of you (that's 280,00 gardens surveyed, which is rather a lot!) helping us create a 'snapshot' picture of bird numbers in each region, showing us that some of our birds are disappearing in scary numbers.
We've lost more than half our house sparrows, and three-quarters of our starlings, and your results have certainly helped highlight these dramatic declines.

Funding for groups
Foundation and has announced some changes on it’s new website.
The Santander Foundation will support disadvantaged people through the
following priorities:
* Education and training - This does not have to be formal training or
lead to a qualification (although these activities are eligible too)
but could be part of lifelong learning; any activity disadvantaged
people undertake to improve their confidence in a skill or their
understanding of a subject.
Examples of possible activities include independent living skills,
anger management, improving self-esteem, reminiscence projects for
older people, art and craft sessions or IT classes.
* Financial capability - This priority includes giving advice and
helping disadvantaged people to take control of their money. It could
include budgeting skills as well as managing the financial challenges
that arise from being a carer, unemployment, break up of
relationships, disability or ill-health.
Examples of possible activities include costs of running a credit
union, projects delivering financial advice and helping people to
understand their benefit entitlement - any project helping people to
make informed choices about their finances might meet this priority.
Grants of up to £10,000 can be awarded anywhere in the UK. However
there are certain areas where Santander has a significant presence and
Community Partnership Groups have been established and higher grants
can be made. There are nine such areas across the UK in which grants
of up to £30,000 are available.
The Foundation is also now able to support revenue or capital items,
such as salaries and project costs or equipment.
There are no deadlines or application form, however there is now a
cover sheet that you can use as a checklist to make sure that you
covered all the information required in your letter of application

Why do conspiracy nut write in CAPITALS?
When the latest conspiracy nut emailed me to tell me that climate change is all a lie and a plot by the global elite to control us, i had to ask him (manuelak on Youtube) why all the capitals?
He replied (at nauseum so here are selected highlights)
'A computer world WITHOUT CAPS and COLORS would be so BORING...so STALE, so UNASSUMING, Grey, flat, dead, lifeless...so British'
So there you go..I asked what decent writer ever used capitals to make their point? he replied
'I'm not a recognized writer NOR I PRETEND to be one, I'm just a REAL, TRUTHFUL, DEDICATED GLOBAL ACTIVIST who finds it inadmissible that in this day and age of UNLTD. INFORMATION, having the Internet at one's disposal, there's this utter ignorance infiltrated under the guise of CLIMATE CHANGE and we need to put an end to this insanity! And WE ARE, as we speak! You and those whom you represent are being exposed to millions on a daily basis! Do yourself a favor and save some major self and public embarrassment that you ignorantly and proud of attract to your own self by going public with your lack of knowledge and incredible level of unawareness and step aside, allowing those in the know to do the job properly and correctly! You guys will feel ashamed of your own selves very soon, time will prove it!
The computers are purposely programmed with CAPS and COLORS, for the purpose of being USED. WHY ELSE?:-)'
So the lesson i learned here is that if you find yourself dismissing climate change as a fantasy, check that that you aren't writing in CAPITALs!
Veg seed swapping in Wales
Next event : Seedy Sunday 2010 - 28th Feb at Y Plas, 10.30am - 4pm
This is a great day for growers and savers to get together and celebrate the sowing season. Don't forget to bring along your spare seeds to swap, and the rest of the family!
http://www.dyfivalleyseedsavers.co.uk
Is there a family favourite vegetable that has been grown and saved for many years? Do you know of a variety with links to a local village, town or region? Have you accidentally or intentionally bred a new variety of vegetable? Or do you save seeds from a variety you can no longer buy?
We are especially interested in tomatoes resistant to blight, rocket that is slow to bolt and strong growing winter salads.
Dyfi Valley Seedsavers, based in Machynlleth, are searching for vegetable varieties that have been grown from their own saved seed in Wales. We aim to bring together a collection of Welsh vegetable varieties which are potentially adapted to our growing conditions, to trial them in Powys, record their characteristics and history, and make seeds available to more growers to preserve precious diversity and heritage.
If you think you have something we might be interested in, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with us with any information about the vegetables(s) history, growing, taste and appearance characteristics, or contact us for more information.

Filmmaker Emily James has been filming for this project since spring and
things are getting busier; ideas are flowing, editing is beginning, finance
applications look promising and help is needed!
We are looking for an assistant editor to help our story editor deal with
the influx of footage. Tasks will include logging and capturing footage,
file management and logistics and basic sequence editing. The role will be
a great opportunity to learn from doing, within a small yet experienced
crew working to produce an original film in an original way. The role will
be voluntary and you will be based from an office space in London, exact
location to be confirmed soon. Ideally you will have your own computer
suitable for editing with final cut pro.
We are furiously putting in funding applications, including one quick turn
around one which we hope will cover immediate short term costs such as
travel for volunteers and rent of a studio/office. We will do our best to
cover what we can to make working on the project viable for volunteers, but
at this stage we can't promise this. We can promise however, the
opportunity to be involved in a truly unique project!

What is wrong with using Amazon?

What is wrong with using Amazon?
In 2001 the Guardian first reported on the poor working conditions in Amazon's
warehouses, and nothing much has changed since. In December 2008, a Sunday Times
reporter went undercover to their Marston Gate warehouse near Milton Keynes and
discovered that staff were required to work seven days a week and were punished for
taking sick leave, even if they had a note from their doctor. According to Unite the
Union, Amazon continues to see trade union representation as illegitimate.
But it’s not just Amazon workers who suffer at the hands of the multi-national
corporation. Publishers are also squeezed for every penny, as Amazon forces them to
supply them at rates so low that it leaves authors and publishers out of pocket –
particularly damaging smaller publishing houses. Amazon’s dominance of the market
means that publishers have little choice but to comply with their demands. Aside
from the ethical considerations, this affects readers in reduced output from small
presses, and diminished availability of radical titles.
Providing an ethical alternative
And so into this arena steps Housmans Bookshop. Housmans, in conjunction with
Gardners Books, has just launched its own online bookshop to rival Amazon. Although
still prioritising their stock of radical interest and progressive politics, the
site is also able to provide around half a million general titles.
“Many of our most politically conscious colleagues use Amazon, and when asked why,
it’s because they know of no alternative. But now, wherever they live, people will
be able to support independent and progressive bookselling from the comfort of their
own home. I think it’s essential that we are able to provide an alternative to help
dent Amazon’s monopoly,” explains co-manager Nik Gorecki. “It’s up to sympathetic
book buyers to do the right thing, and buy their books elsewhere.”
“This year Housmans celebrates fifty years of trading from our Caledonian Road
address, but in order for us to be here another fifty years we have to stand up for
ourselves, and trust in ethically-minded book-buyers to support independents. The
staff at Housmans has fought many battles over the years for causes we believe in,
and this is one battle we can’t afford to lose. Please support the shop that
supports your campaigns!”

Tactical Media for social change activism
A must-see documentary explores how campaigners are successfully using new technologies and tactics to change the status quo.Tactical Tech is an international NGO working at the point where advocacy meets technology. We use our technical expertise to increase the impact of campaigns in social justice and human rights.
Tactical Tech believes that new technologies have significant potential to enhance the work of campaigners and advocates, giving them the tools to gather and analyse information and the means to turn that information into action.
To help make this possible, Tactical Tech has, over the past four years, trained nearly 1,000 advocates and technologists in developing and transition countries in the use of technology for social change, provided consultancy and mentoring to over ten NGO movements and networks and created a suite of toolkits and guides specifically for use by advocates.
Turning human waste into plant food

It's a sobering fact that a full 40 percent of the world's population—some 2.6 billion people—lack regular access to a toilet. Add to that the fact that one child dies every 15 seconds from water contamination, and it's not hard to see the motivation behind the Peepoo bag.
One of the UN Millennium Development Goals, set in 2000, is to halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to drinking water and sanitation, but so far progress has been minimal. With that in mind, Swedish Peepoople created the Peepoo bag to serve as a personal, portable and low-cost latrine for all the many people who don't have one. Designed for use sitting, squatting or standing, the single-use, biodegradable plastic bag measures 14 by 38 cm and is lined with a urea-coated gauze layer that disinfects all waste. Used bags are odour-free for at least 24 hours and are safe for burial underground. Within two to four weeks after use, however, their contents get converted to high-quality fertiliser—something that's also rare in many areas and so could become a source of income and further enrichment for an individual or village. Following field tests last year in Kenya and India, the Peepoo bag is scheduled to begin production this summer.
Along with such efforts as distributing free insect nets to children in malaria-ridden areas and abolishing fees for school uniforms in poor countries, the Peepoo bag qualifies as a quick-win project that could rapidly improve the lives of many people. One to get in on, help out with, or be inspired by!

No you can't use my film in the Superbowl
To launch their campaign to sell vacations during the Superbowl homeaway.com wanted to use our video to show terrible experiences of staying in Hotels.
I would have to give them permission to use, publish, upload, reproduce and otherwise display my video, in any manner or media, including the Internet, anywhere in the world...oh yes and all this for Zero money, yes that is Zero.
They wrote...
Hi Paul,
The purpose of the HomeAway microsite and the contest associated with it is to encourage users to upload videos showing their worst hotel experiences. The only compensation we can offer you is submission into the contest. We are not in a position to pay individuals for their content.
With Regards,
Courtney
So i replied to them..
Hello Courtney
The purpose of my company is to produce films which can produce funds to pay our staff. If a company such as HomeAway wishes to use our work to promote their own commercial enterprises, then we would need compensation. That is what we call a fair system.
Regards
Paul
She replied...
Hi Paul,
Our intention was never to be unfair. We were only looking for content on public websites such as Flickr and YoutTube that showcased customers' difficulties with hotels. The videos were only meant to be filler material for our contest encouraging the submission of user-generated content representing the very same theme.
Thank you for listening to our offer and good luck to your company.
With Regards,
Courtney Dickey | Staff Attorney | HomeAway, Inc.

Chocs away
Multinationals are keen on stamping out local names in favour of those recognisable worldwide. Some of Britain's favourites have already been lost to global-speak. Opal Fruits became Starburst, Marathon became Snickers, and Treets became M&Ms.
Rationing In Britain
An American commentator looks at the effects of rationing on the people of England in 1944.
The film presents a 'typical' family of 4 (housewife, engine-driver husband, factory-working daughter, schoolboy son) to illustrate the basic rationing system, the workings of 'point' systems and other restrictions, and the difficulties the average family faced when eating 'on the ration'.
What's Going On
Activists are calling for a BOYCOTT of THE 2010 TEL AVIV INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article11016.shtml
I disagree with this as I attended the Tel Aviv festival a few years ago and it gave me first hand experience of life in Palestine. I also got another activist film maker into the country and he made a great film, the 4th World War which showed life under Israeli rule. Boycotts can be useful but to stop film makers sharing their views of the world on screen is wrong. Israeli students are hammered every day with government propaganda. They feel under threat and are living in fear just as Palestinian people are. If foreign film makers can meet and explain how they see the world, then that can't be a bad thing.

Brand Obama

Naomi Klein writes that Obama is the biggest corporate brand in USA
When Obama was sworn in as president, the American brand could scarcely have been more battered – Bush was to his country what New Coke was to Coca-Cola, what cyanide in the bottles had been to Tylenol. Yet Obama, in what was perhaps the most successful rebranding campaign of all time, managed to turn things around. Kevin Roberts, global CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi, set out to depict visually what the new president represented. In a full-page graphic commissioned by the stylish Paper Magazine, he showed the Statue of Liberty with her legs spread, giving birth to Barack Obama. America, reborn.
