Film Critic of Pentagon

None of like critics of our films but if we can leave our ego aside for a minute, many times it helps our films become much better.

I just spotted this criticism of a film uploaded about 'a group of left-wing activists, rebelling against all and nothing, are holding a pair of right-wing fanatics hostage.'

Sounds interesting enough but viewer dncholas said'
This might actually be a decent flick but the resolution is so bad I cannot watch it. Makes me feel like I took my glasses off and watching a blur. I recommend uploading a better copy of this if you want anyone to watch it.'

Fair enough and easy to fix except the film maker replied
'Actually the film is supposed to look that way. It was intentionally filmed with an older mobile phone. I agree the resolution is bad, but somehow that's the point.'

Now if someone complains that they can't actually watch your film without feeling ill..then i think you need to look at it again or be clear about your platform of distribution and only make it available for viewing on mobile phones)

A plan for local broadcasting

In a speech to the Royal Television Society, the Secretary of State
has detailed the Government’s commitment to decentralise broadcasting
to increase localisation.

With political power increasingly being devolved to locally elected
politicians, it makes sense, he says, for a network of local media
stations to evolve in order to reflect the strong desire for locally
focused coverage.

The new landscape
+++++++++++++++

Mr Hunt outlined a vision of a network of local, cross-platform
multimedia TV services which would:

- broadcast for as little as an hour a day
- be free to affiliate with each other to bring down costs
- be able to offer nationwide deals to advertisers
- piggyback on existing national networks, including broadband infrastructure
- exploit new technologies such as Canvas, YouView and mobile TV

The Government’s role
+++++++++++++++++

The Government will encourage the development of this new local landscape by

- removing all the local cross-media ownership rules
- redefining ‘public service broadcasting’ to emphasise local content
- legislating to clarify which public service broadcasters should be
listed on the front page of electronic programme guides and their
online equivalents
- working with the BBC to encourage partnership with local media providers

commercially viable local TV in the UK:

BBC killing off rival internet TV channels?

The BBC-backed video-on-demand service YouView is strangling investment in rival internet TV services, according to a report by the corporate finance firm Avista Partners.

YouView, which aims to offer on-demand TV services to more than 10m Freeview and Freesat households, is a partnership between the BBC,ITV, Channel 4, TalkTalk, BT, Channel 5 and Arqiva, with a funding commitment of £126m.

Avista Partners argued that YouView, which is scheduled to launch in
the first half of next year, is "putting existing and future
investment in the UK IPTV industry at risk".

The company said its research showed that investment in the UK online
TV sector has plummeted since 2008, when plans for YouView – then
called Project Canvas – were first announced, with the decline not
accounted for solely by the general downturn in the economy.

Avista estimates that in the 12 months before plans for YouView were
first unveiled, internet protocol television (IPTV) investment in the
UK was about $35m (£22m), some 15.4% of global investment in the
sector. However, investment has plummeted since, with just $400,000
ploughed into the UK sector, outside of the YouView partners, in the
past 12 months.

"The UK has witnessed a dramatic fall in private investment for
IPTV-based businesses since Project Canvas [YouView] was first
announced," said the Avista Partners managing director, Paul Heydon.
"It is difficult to lay the blame on the economic crisis for this,
especially when comparing the extreme buoyancy of US investments in
this sector for the same period. It is clear the collective power of
the companies behind Project Canvas is a major cause for concern for
investors looking at private IPTV businesses in the UK."

Avista's figures for the US show that in the 12 months before plans
for YouView were unveiled, TV investment stood at $91m and the
following year it surged to $274m – while the UK slumped 94% over the
same period to $2.1m. US online TV investment was still a healthy
$176m in the past 12 months.

Another reason not to trust the Met Police

This is a concern. I read today of another case of Police shooting dead a civilian. Now we hear that the Metropolitan Police Commander Dizaei who controlled the shooting is now in jail.

Not for the shooting dead of the civilian but for corruption after he was convicted of attempting to frame a web designer for assault.

Case after case is turning up corrupt cops which I find very worrying.

UN report-Israeli raid on Gaza aid flotilla broke the law

But Israel won't accept the blame as the raid on the Mavi Marmara resulted in the deaths of nine pro-Palestinian activists

Israel's military broke international laws during a raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, a UN Human Rights Council investigation says. But we can't be suprised that Israel won't accept any responsibility for it's crime. In the past few years we have seen it's troops bulldozer and kill a young American woman for daring to try and save a Palestinian family home.

Israel believed it was going the right thing by firing bullets into the church of the nativity during their invasion of Bethlehem.

A young English photographer was shot dead by Israeli snipers for daring to save Palestinian children from Israeli bullets.

Israel is a state which is out of control. Their Government can not be trusted to do any independent inquiry. The international community has to stand up to this bully and say No more killings.

Trees of the future

I hear a talk yesterday with Ben Law, the woodsman. He said Oak trees grown in the UK probably will be of little use for building in 30 years time. Climate Change and new pests will attack them so we have to look at other speices.

Today I read about Chestnut Conker trees are under attack by 'alien' invaders!
Have you noticed whitish patches on the leaves of horse chestnut trees? By the middle of summer, the whitish patches die and turn brown. Sometimes whole trees turn brown, and it looks like autumn has come early. The damage is caused by a tiny 'alien' species of leaf-mining moth, which is invading the UK. For biologists, an 'alien' is a species not naturally found in an area or habitat. The moth’s caterpillars eat the leaves from the inside. Infected trees are weakened, and produce smaller conkers.

Get the latest Yes Men movie for free (or donation)

TV won't show the latest Yes Men film so one of the reasons The Yes Men decided to release a version via VODO download was that they’re being sued by the US Chamber of Commerce for material contained within the film, and none of the networks are willing touch it until the lawsuit is resolved.

The Yes Men didn’t just do this to give the impression that it’s not all about commercial gain. They also did it to avoid paying for E&O or “errors and omissions” insurance, which documentary filmmakers are often required to buy if they can’t verify that every detail in the fore or background of every shot is free of copyright infringement. The E&O requirement is a huge hurdle for independent filmmakers.

The Most Lethal War For Journalists

A recent report from Reporters Without Borders (RWB) comments:
“The second U.S. war with Iraq [2003 onwards] has been the most lethal for
journalists since World War II. To date, the number of journalists and media
contributors killed in the country since the conflict broke out on 20 March 2003
stands at 230. That is more than those killed during the entire Vietnam War or the
civil war in Algeria.

“Iraq has also been the world’s biggest market for hostages. Over 93 media
professionals were abducted in those seven years, at least 42 of whom were later
executed. Moreover, 14 are still missing.”

Pope owes me some lost sleep

I recall being a child and being woken up at 5am to join the million or so people flocking to see The Pope who was visiting Dublin, Ireland on September 29 1979.

Walking through the Phoenix Park and seeing thousands of people emerging from the mists to hear Gods salesman drone on about every sperm being sacred was the finale for my belief in a Christian God. The mist made everyone look like Zombies.

The rise in birth rates in Ireland began in the early 1970s and peaked in June 1980, exactly nine months after the pope's visit so people had followed the Popes sermon it seems!

I recall that his visit became the very the moment which turned me off Religion for life. I am heartened from hearing of dastardly plans to disrupt this present Popes trip around the UK.

Undercurrents set to launch latest film about Timber building

An 85minute film showing an innovative way of building low cost yet beautiful houses will be launched on September 21st.

Paul O’Connor, co-founder of Undercurrents, a media charity based in The Environment centre, Swansea, spent the Summer filming master woodsman Ben Law.

Ben Law shot to national fame following his appearance on Channel 4's Grand Designs programme. His self built house proved to be the most popular program of the series.

Within the new 90 minute film titled RoundWood Timber Framing, Ben Law presents the step-by-step design and build process for a locally sourced timber framed buildings.

Ben Law is arguably Britain's greatest living woodsman. He has inspired millions with his numerous TV appearances, training courses and lectures, and was most notably voted by viewers as having the Best Ever Build on Channel 4's Grand Designs programme with his Woodland House. Ben had a 10 year struggle to obtain planning permission to build a house in his own woods, made mainly out of materials from the woodland itself. His aim is to inspire and encourage people everywhere to build low impact, beautiful and natural roundwood buildings.

Film maker, Paul O’Connor of Undercurrents said
‘I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a Summer than filming a beautiful structure being built by a man who is such an inspiring builder. The film has been the most enjoyable film I have ever made and the information ranges from woodland management to choosing timber to actually building with wood, straw and clay. We also filmed how to take your house off grid by using solar panels which is included as a bonus feature on the DVD.’

The DVD will be launched on September 21st in Hampshire inside the building featured in the DVD.

The Barbie Liberation Front

The Barbie Liberation Front was an organization that caused a significant cultural jamming intervention in 1993. Having purchased many Barbie dolls and GI Joe action figures, the group switched the voice boxes from a pair of dolls (one from either group) and then surreptitiously placed them onto store shelves. Needless to say, customers who purchased the toys were surprised to find gung-ho, combat ready Barbie dolls or effeminate GI Joes that were more interested in shopping than shooting.

Blair and Pope join forces to tour UK

TWO BIRDS WITH ONE EGG?
The Guardian reported, "protests could increase after it emerged that Tony Blair, who has been pelted with eggs and cancelled two public events in the past week, is likely to accompany the Pope on part of his trip".

It turns out that if it were not for Mr Blair, this state visit may not be taking place.

It is reported "he was one of the first to support inviting the Pope after paying three visits to the Vatican while he was the nation’s political leader". Cherie Blair also had her own private audience with Benedict. Following their visits, Gordon Brown met Benedict XVI twice at the Vatican, once as Prime Minister last year when he
invited the Pope on behalf of the Queen.

Flying the flag, faking the news

by John Pilger

Edward Bernays, the American nephew of Sigmund Freud, is said to have invented modern propaganda. During the first world war, he was one of a group of influential liberals who mounted a secret government campaign to persuade reluctant Americans to send an army to the bloodbath in Europe. In his book, Propaganda, published in 1928, Bernays wrote that the “intelligent manipulation of the organised habits and opinions of the masses was an important element in democratic society” and that the manipulators “constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power in our country”. Instead of propaganda, he coined the euphemism “public relations”.

The American tobacco industry hired Bernays to convince women they should smoke in public. By associating smoking with women’s liberation, he made cigarettes “torches of freedom”. In 1954, he conjured a communist menace in Guatemala as an excuse for overthrowing the democratically-elected government, whose social reforms were threatening the United Fruit company’s monopoly of the banana trade. He called it a “liberation”.

Bernays was no rabid right-winger. He was an elitist liberal who believed that “engineering public consent” was for the greater good. This was achieved by the creation of “false realities” which then became “news events”. Here are examples of how it is done these days:

False reality The last US combat troops have left Iraq “as promised, on schedule”, according to President Barack Obama. TV screens have filled with cinematic images of the “last US soldiers” silhouetted against the dawn light, crossing the border into Kuwait.

Fact They are still there. At least 50,000 troops will continue to operate from 94 bases. American air assaults are unchanged, as are special forces’ assassinations. The number of “military contractors” is currently 100,000 and rising. Most Iraqi oil is now under direct foreign control.

False reality BBC presenters and reporters have described the departing US troops as a “sort of victorious army” that has achieved “a remarkable change in [Iraq’s] fortunes”. Their commander, General David Petraeus, is a “celebrity”, “charming”, “savvy” and “remarkable”.

Fact There is no victory of any sort. There is a catastrophic disaster; and attempts to present it as otherwise are a model of Bernays’ campaign to “re-brand” the slaughter of the first world war as “necessary” and “noble”. In 1980, Ronald Reagan, running for president, re-branded the invasion of Vietnam, in which up to three million people died, as a “noble cause”, a theme taken up enthusiastically by Hollywood. Today’s Iraq war movies have a similar purging theme: the invader as both idealist and victim.

False reality It is not known how many Iraqis have died. They are “countless” or maybe “in the tens of thousands”.

Fact As a direct consequence of the Anglo-American led invasion, a million Iraqis have died. This figure from Opinion Research Business is based on peer-reviewed research led by Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC, whose methods were secretly affirmed as “best practice” and “robust” by the Blair government’s chief scientific adviser, as revealed in a Freedom of Information search. This figure is rarely reported or presented to “charming” and “savvy” American generals. Neither is the dispossession of four million Iraqis, the malnourishment of most Iraqi children, the epidemic of mental illness and the poisoning of the environment.

False reality The British economy has a deficit of billions which must be reduced with cuts in public services and regressive taxation, in a spirit of “we’re all in this together”.

Fact We are not in this together. What is remarkable about this public relations triumph is that only 18 months ago the diametric opposite filled TV screens and front pages. Then, in a state of shock, truth was unavoidable, if briefly. The Wall Street and City of London financiers’ trough was on full view for the first time, along with the venality of once celebrated snouts. Billions in public money went to inept and crooked organisations known as banks, which were spared debt liability by their Labour government sponsors.

Within a year, record profits and personal bonuses were posted, and state and media propaganda had recovered its equilibrium. Suddenly, the “black hole” was no longer the responsibility of the banks, whose debt is to be paid by those not in any way responsible: the public. The received media wisdom of this “necessity” is now a chorus, from the BBC to the Sun. A masterstroke, Bernays would surely say.

False reality The former government minister Ed Miliband offers a “genuine alternative” as leader of the British Labour Party.

Fact Miliband, like his brother David, the former foreign secretary, and almost all those standing for the Labour leadership, is immersed in the effluent of New Labour. As a New Labour MP and minister, he did not refuse to serve under Blair or speak out against Labour’s persistent warmongering. He now calls the invasion of Iraq a “profound mistake”. Calling it a mistake insults the memory and the dead. It was a crime, of which the evidence is voluminous. He has nothing new to say about the other colonial wars, none of them mistakes. Neither has he demanded basic social justice: that those who caused the recession clear up the mess and that Britain’s fabulously rich corporate minority be seriously taxed, starting with Rupert Murdoch.

Of course, the good news is that false realities often fail when the public trusts its own critical intelligence, not the media. Two classified documents recently released by Wikileaks express the CIA’s concern that the populations of European countries, which oppose their governments’ war policies, are not succumbing to the usual propaganda spun through the media. For the rulers of the world, this is a conundrum, because their unaccountable power rests on the false reality that no popular resistance works. And it does.

John Pilger

Two protestors scaled the high fencing at the side of parliament with a ladder, provisions and banners, they scaled the scaffolding at the front of the house of commons and unfurled two large 'troops home' banners, two 'peace' banners, and large banner of the squatters section 6 'legal warning' claiming occupation of the site.

The protestors are hoping to stay on site until the start of the debate on Afghanistan today which will be marked also by a 'stop the war coalition' protest in parliament square at noon.

Clever viral video

A very clever viral video from Tippex has launched its new video campaign on YouTube. The ingenious ads begin with a video titled ‘NSFW. A hunter shoots a bear!’, which then offers viewers a choice of whether to shoot the bear or not.

Who Killed the Electric Car? - Wednesday 20 October 6:30 pm

It was among the fastest, most efficient production cars ever built. It ran on electricity, produced no emissions and catapulted American technology to the forefront of the automotive industry. The lucky few who drove it never wanted to give it up. So why did General Motors crush its fleet of EV-1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert?

Vanishing of the Bees - Wednesday 27 October 6:30 pm

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. In the UK, around one fifth of honeybee hives were lost in the winter 2008/09. Bees pollinate a third of the food we eat, and this contributes £200 million a year to the UK economy. Vanishing of the Bees, is an eye-opening account of the shocking truth behind the declining bee population.

Ben Law, master timber builder going on tour this month

I have been filming Ben Law all Summer long to make a DVD about Roundwood timber framing. This is a unique form of construction using poles (often coppiced) in the round, rather than in the square, to create structurally stronger, lower cost and aesthetically beautiful buildings.

It takes its origins from the early traditional green wood frame designs of England, and the scribing techniques of the log builders of Scandinavia, U.S.A. and Canada, as well as creating jointing techniques unique to its own construction form.

It uses smaller diameter poles than traditional framing and a much smaller number of them compared to log building. It is suitable for framing in different climates and has the advantage of using construction methods that are suited to the use of local materials and semi skilled labour. In England, it has a growing demand and is becoming the new vernacular of sustainable building in the 21st century.

To launch his new book and DVD, Ben is undertaking a series of high profile talks this summer. He is as ever in demand from the media (TV, radio, printed press and online) and is available for exclusive features and interviews.

Police fail to shut down Israeli window display

Police demanded a shop near Portsmouth to take down its window display as it referred to Israel being a terror state. However Police were scared off after the clued up workers gave him an education.

The shop owner said the Police then 'rang us up and continued the conversation. He said we had to remove the reference to Israel terror state as it was in contravention of Section 31 of the Public order Act because it would cause racial or religious aggravated harassment, alarm or distress. Once we pointed out to him that Israel was a state and not a race or religion he shut up and went away. We have not heard from them since, but we haven't given up hope.'
