Funds for Empowerment

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) is seeking proposals for projects
that help us understand the future we are facing, and suggest ways in
which disadvantaged communities can be protected, or even supported to
thrive.

The JRF accepts proposals from any organisation or individual and does
not restrict its funding to any particular sector. Proposals must have
relevance to JRF’s mission to search out underlying causes,
demonstrate solutions and influence lasting change in one or more of
the following themes:

* Poverty: to examine the root causes of poverty, inequality and
disadvantage, and identify solutions

* Empowerment: to identify ways of enabling people and communities to
have control of their own lives

* Place: to contribute to the creation and development of strong,
sustainable and inclusive communities.

The JRF welcomes applications for both small and large projects, but
is unlikely to fund any project with a budget of more than £100,000.
The deadline is 2 August 2010. For more information, or to download an
application form, visit the JRF website here:

Novelty Band threatened by Brewery on way to Glastonbury festival

Press Release Wednesday 23 2010
Musicians and their young families were threatened today by 12 black clad men hired by Thatchers the cider company.

The Dukes, a novelty band which plays inside a human sized Juke box, were traveling to play their 5th gig at Glastonbury festival, when they stopped to purchase cider from the Thatchers brewery shop.

After making their purchases, the band members prepared to move on to Glastonbury festival. Suddenly a group of heavy set men, one with an iron rod in his hand, ordered the band and their young families to get out of the car park immediately as they were not quick enough in leaving.

A shocked Beth Furlong, wife of the lead singer said
‘ We were confronted by large men dressed in black showing aggressive attitudes and ordering us to leave. My husband had our four year old son crying in his arms as a man held an iron rod, obviously with the intention of smashing our skulls in. I couldn’t believe that the brewery were treating their customers in this way.’

Lead singer of The Dukes, Jo Furlong called for the shop staff to intervene and to bear witness to the aggression being displayed.

The entire incident was recorded on CCTV and the band is issuing a complaint to the owners of the brewery.

The band issued the following statement
‘This is not the way we expected to start our Glastonbury festival and can not understand why a reputable brewery would allow its staff to behave in such a threatening way towards their customers, The Dukes produce music that makes people smile and laugh while it seems Thatchers make a beverage that encourages their staff to want to fight’

The Dukes will be playing Glastonbury festival on Friday and Saturday

Just Do It- a new activist feature documentary on the way

Just Do It is an exciting new feature documentary film that follows the mischievous and risky world of UK climate activists.

In early 2009, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Emily James began filming the clandestine activities of several groups of environmental civil disobedient activists in the UK. Allowed unprecedented access, her footage shows us the people behind the politics, providing the often overlooked human element to their story as we watch them take on the combined forces of global capitalism, run-away climate change and those pesky metropolitan police!

British soldiers to be found guilty of killing unarmed civilians

After 38 years, the long-awaited report into the Bloody Sunday massacre will conclude that a number of the fatal shootings of civilians by British soldiers were unlawful killings.

13 unarmed civilians, all of them male, were shot dead at a civil rights march in the Bogside area of Derry in January 1972. A 14th man died of his wounds several months later.

Lord Saville's 12-year inquiry into the deaths, the longest public inquiry in British legal history, will conclude with a report published next Tuesday, putting severe pressure on the Public Prosecution Service in Northern Ireland to prosecute soldiers.

Free chainsaw course for novices

We are running an experimental two-day chainsaw course for novices on
Sunday/Monday 4-5th July 2010 in Derbyshire, and may have space for one or
two people.

It would be free of charge, unless you would like a Lantra certificate from
the course, which would cost £28. There is scope for camping overnight on
site on the Sunday night (but probably not before). You would have to be
able to arrive by 9am on the Sunday morning, and you would need to bring
your own chainsaw (of any size and quality) and safety gear.

The course will focus mainly on maintenance, safety and crosscutting, but
not on felling trees. It will obviously feature in Living Woods!

If you are interested, and can definitely commit to the dates, please email
us asap. We are trying to get a good cross-section of types of people on the
course.

Israeli media propaganda machine scores an own goal

The most recent video distributed on Friday by the Israeli government press office (which belongs to the Israeli prime minister's office and is responsible for accrediting foreign journalists) is distasteful and insulting to those killed and injured on the Freedom Flotilla, and quite frankly disturbing - especially since it was made by the Jerusalem Post's deputy managing editor, Caroline Glick, who also moonlights for the American Center for Security Policy in Washington, DC.
On Friday afternoon, the Israeli Government issued the following email:
Due to a misunderstanding on our part, earlier today we inadvertently issued a video link that had been sent for our perusal. It was not intended for general release. The contents of the video in no way represent the official policy of either the Government Press Office or of the State of Israel.
We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your patients and understanding.

The Turkish men on board the Mavi Marmara were shot a total of 30 times and five were killed by gunshot wounds to the head, according to the vice-chairman of the Turkish council of forensic medicine, which carried out the autopsies for the Turkish ministry of justice today.

The results revealed that a 60-year-old man, Ibrahim Bilgen, was shot four times in the temple, chest, hip and back. A 19-year-old, named as Fulkan Dogan, who also has US citizenship, was shot five times from less that 45cm, in the face, in the back of the head, twice in the leg and once in the back. Two other men were shot four times, and five of the victims were shot either in the back of the head or in the back, said Yalcin Buyuk, vice-chairman of the council of forensic medicine.
