Cop pulls out gun at Snowball Fight!

Around 2.30PM on Saturday, December 19, during a historic snowstorm, residents at the intersection of 14th and U Streets NW started throwing snowballs at passing Hummers. One of the cars pelted was driven by a plainclothes police officer identified only as Det. Baylor. Baylor got out of his car and brandished his gun at the crowd. Reason.tv's Dan Hayes was on the scene, capturing the tense confrontation between police and citizens who chanted "Don't bring a gun to a snowball fight!" Approximately 5 minutes; harsh language throughout. For a news account of the incident, go to http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/1209/689050.html

Tuxedo activists need springing from Danish Jail

A message from Greenpeace
Four of our activists face Christmas in jail over charges relating to a peaceful protest at the Heads of State dinner at the Copenhagen climate summit.

We're calling for the immediate release of the activists - please help us by writing to the Danish Embassy today.

The activists joined Heads of State from over 120 countries en route to the banquet at the Danish Parliament. They arrived in a three-vehicle convoy and stepped out onto the red carpet as representatives of the millions of people around the world who wanted a fair, ambitious and legally binding treaty to head-off climate catastrophe.
They held up banners reading: "Politicians Talk, Leaders Act", and demanded
action, not just words from Presidents and Prime Ministers during their Friday
session of the climate summit.

While the political leaders who are the perpetrators of real crime in Copenhagen have now fled the country on private jets, the Danish authorities decided to detain, without trial, four peaceful protesters over Christmas.

Their families will spend a bleak festive season knowing that their loved ones will be languishing in isolation for acting to save the climate. For standing up in defense of the hundreds of millions of people and countless species which will be severely affected by catastrophic climate change.

The four activists - Juantxo, Joris, Nora, and Christian - were willing to risk jail time to do something about climate change and look forward to presenting their arguments in court. But keeping them apart from their families and loved ones over Christmas and New Year is both inhumane and out of all proportion to what they did.

Now they need your help. Please take a few minutes to write to the Danish
Ambassador requesting their immediate release. Thank you for your support.

Killing in the name - rage against the machine

Wiped the smirk off Simon Cowell and his sterile music off the face of the charts!

Rock band Rage Against the Machine ended Simon Cowell’s four year domination of the Christmas charts tonight after a hugely popular Facebook campaign helped the Los Angeles nu-metallers snatch the Christmas number one slot from X-factor’s Joe McEdlerry.

More than half a million people downloaded the band’s famously anti-authoritarian and expletive laden track “Killing in the Name” in what was seen as a broad protest against the increasing influence of manufactured pop music.
A BBC spokesperson said Radio 1 and Radio 6 would continue to play the clean edit of “Killing in the Name” which cuts out the 17 swearwords at the end of the song. Radio Two will not play the Rage track but will play McElderry.

Art student arrested for filming a building

An Italian student has described how she was stopped by police under anti-terrorist legislation while filming buildings, and later arrested, held in a police cell for five hours and given a fixed penalty notice.

The jumped up little git of a community support officer (PCSOs) in the photo caused Simona Bonomo, 32, an art student at London Metropolitan University at London Metropolitan University, to be nicked. But she filmed the moment on 19 November. Watch the video and read the report.

Guardian journo went and filmed the Gherkin building just to see what the response would be..incredible how the cops are so up their own arse!

The cops say 'According to legislation, digital images may be viewed as part of a search under section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 provided viewing is to determine whether the images are of a kind which could be used in conjunction with terrorism.'

Pinocchio and TV lies

On my last journey through Europe I walked many gritty streets in search of street art. This piece had been painted on a construction site in Italy. I loved the Pinocchio / television references.. I’m not sure if that’s what the artist meant, but what I read from it is ‘the television lies!’. said Jess Worth,

Police get slapped for misusing terror laws against photographers

Police forces across the country have been warned to stop using anti-terror laws to question and search innocent photographers after The Independent forced senior officers to admit that the controversial legislation is being widely misused.

The strongly worded warning was circulated by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) last night. In an email sent to the chief constables of England and Wales's 43 police forces, officers were advised that Section 44 powers should not be used unnecessarily against photographers. The message says: "Officers and community support officers are reminded that we should not be stopping and searching people for taking photos. Unnecessarily restricting photography, whether from the casual tourist or professional, is unacceptable."

This is good news for us all..read more

Director of Koyaanisqatsi,

The trilogy of films including Koyaanisqatsi inspired me to make films.
The director said
Lets say if I somehow had The Truth, and it was applicable to everyone, the
very act of giving it to everyone would, for me, be a fascistic act.

It is very easy to make clear what you want a film to say, but I did not wish to engage in overt propaganda, even for the right cause. I wanted to create an experience
through the films, something where people could have the freedom of their own
response to them. So, not for lack of love of language, but because I feel our
language is in an enormous state of humiliation, I decided to make films
without words. Now having said that, Iíve taken the famous dictum, a picture ís
worth a thousand words,î and turned it completely upside down. I try to offer
the viewer a thousand pictures to give them the power of one word; in this case
from an inscrutable, uncivilized and illiterate language, Hopi, which I think
has more wisdom in it than our own language, which has lost its ability to
describe the world in which we live. Iíve chosen words like koyaanisqatsi,
powaqqatsi and naqoyqatsi so that I could use their subjective categories to
look at the white peopleís world or ìcivilizedî world. In my case, Iím trying
to look at this world as if an alien appeared and was trying to make some
visual if not emotive sense out of what they encounter.

Incredible interview with a true survival expert

Just heard this on the radio- he is the 2nd person interviewed- incredible

Fergus Anckorn was held as a PoW by the Japanese for over three years during the Second World War, helping build the infamous 'Bridge over the River Kwai'. Now aged 91, he is the longest serving active member of the Magic Circle. Having performed as a magician since he was a small boy, little did he know that his performing skills would save his life. During his time as a PoW, he sometimes did magic tricks for the guards and soon found that if he used their food as part of the trick, they let him eat it afterwards. A book about his life, Surviving By Magic is written by Monty Parkin.

Me and Orson Welles

In his later years Orson Welles made wine and beer commercials. He acted in The Muppet Movie and Magnum PI and narrated a documentary about Bugs Bunny. Sometimes he gave lectures, too, shambling into the half-empty town-halls of middle America to breathlessly introduce himself as a film director, writer and actor; a magician, designer and painter. Then his eyes would flick across the rows of empty seats. "Isn't it strange," he said, "that there are so many of me and so few of you?"
